Octoberfest

October is fast approaching and what a month it will be on our golfing calendar.

  1. Golf Week 8th Oct-11th Oct
  2. Murray Bridge Open 19th Oct
  3. SA Senior Championship

      54 holes 22nd Oct – 24th Oct.

4.  Club Mixed Foursomes

5.   Club AGM 27 Oct.

These events are only going to be successful with the support of you our Members.  I encourage you to support these events or like many other events of the past they will become distant memories.

Golf week incentive.

If you a member of our club register to play with a member of another club that you have introduced you will be able to play that event for half the cost i.e. $5.00.

SA Senior Championship.

This event is a first for the Murray Bridge Golf Club. The championship is being held over three days and is a 54 hole event (18 each day) and is open to players over the age of 55 with a handicap of 15.4 or below.

A true test of skill!!!

It would be great to see a Murray Bridge Member become the SA Senior Champion.

I’m sure we all know a fellow golfer from another club who would qualify, so why not get on the old dog and bone (phone) and encourage them to register.

Just a thought. Invite them to the open on the 19th Oct. this will give them a bit of practice and a little knowledge of our course.

(Killing two birds with one stone)

State of the Club

Where are we at the moment?

The club has certainly had a very difficult year with some had decisions being made to keep our golf club running.

The number 1 priority as far as the course was concerned was water.

and $37,000.00 was spent on this cause.

A decision at last Octobers AGM to change our subscription has had an impact on income for this year. However this should right itself this financial year. Providing members renew their membership.

Income from subs for the period 01 Nov 07 to 30 Jun 08 was some 19% less than expected. Returns from the water levy were 29% less than expected.

The impact of the ban on smoking in our gaming room has also certainly put a dent in our income.

Although the club has had a few problem areas with income it’s not all gloom and doom.

All in all, the club I believe is in a strong financial position due to some hard decisions made by the committee with cost cutting. However cutting cost has just about been exhausted and the only way that the club can prosper is to increase income.

How do we do that is the question?

An idea. In a nutshell, if each person in our club was to introduce just one person to the game of golf it would have a tremendous effect on the future of our club. It is time individual golfers take an active role in promoting and ensuring the ongoing health of the sport and our club.

I have not met one person who has been introduced to the game of golf by a local or national advertising program.

“It’s always a family member or friend”

Remember the $100 discount of your membership if you introduce a full member, so become an active member and introduce a new golfer.

It can be done. Just ask Henry Pohorama, a member for less than 2 years and he has already introduced 5 new members. (Thanks Henry).

Now whilst on new members you will notice a number of new faces on the course and around the club rooms.

Please the longer serving members of the club, introduce yourself to them and make them feel welcome.

A question to you all?

When was the last time you invited a beginner to a round of Golf?

Ladies Salver.

Seem like only yesterday but back in July the club held the ladies Bronze Salver.

We had 142 players from around the state enjoy are course and our country hospitality.

All members should be proud of the way Maureen and the ladies committee approached this event.

I did not hear one negative comment from any of the 142 ladies who played over the three days.

Again “WELL DONE” Maureen.

To the many men and ladies that helped during the week, either scoring raking bunkers or helping around the club house a big thank you.

I have not mentioned name as there are too many of you however, the Budgie man was a big hit with the ladies.

Good on Budgie. (Squashy).

Ladies Lower Murray Open

A reminder to all ladies the Ladies Lower Murray Open is only a few days away. Thursday 18th of September.

This is always a great day on the ladies calendar.
